Harold Nilsson, M.D.

I first came to Hawaii in 1991 to serve as an Instructor for the University of Hawaii Pediatric Residency Program at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children (1991-1992). I am a native of Stockholm, Sweden, where I completed medical school in 1987 and then moved to New York for my pediatric residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1988-1991). After working as a Pediatrician for the military 1992-1996, I decided to start my own private practice in Honolulu in 1997, my new home. I moved to my current location at the Ala Moana Center in 2004. The “Medical Home” concept as developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is at the core of my practice philosophy. It emphasizes having the personal healthcare provider taking responsibility for each child’s many needs (whether medical, educational, social or behavioral) in a culturally sensitive way and using all available resources in the community, including specialist care when needed, but always being the central home coordinating all the care. We work as a team to make sure we focus on preventing illness and any future problems before they occur, rather than having to deal with illnesses “after the fact”. Due to the larger impact developmental and behavioral problems have on children these days, I have a special interest in managing these sometimes difficult and time-consuming issues. I greatly appreciate having the opportunity to make a positive impact for each and every child in my practice, which is my main goal as a pediatrician. It is incredibly inspiring to see a child grow up healthy and happy and able to reach his or her full potential.
